Does my child need therapy?

You know your child. Trust that feeling.

Kids and teens show distress in different ways. Some of these are a normal part of growing up, but if they're getting out of hand or getting in the way, it may be time to talk to someone.

How child therapy works here

Your child's therapist uses play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and talk therapy, depending on age. We assess behavior, mood, and how your child is doing, then build a plan, with parenting strategies for you along the way.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?
Watch for changes that last or get in the way: withdrawal, sadness, worry, frequent outbursts, losing interest in hobbies, or falling behind in school. If you're unsure, the free 15-minute consultation is a good place to ask.
What if my child or teen doesn’t want to go?
That is common. For teens, introducing the idea gradually helps. With younger children, our therapists use non-directive methods like play therapy, so sessions feel less like talking on demand.
Will I be involved as a parent?
Yes. Child therapy here supports parents and caregivers too. Your child’s therapist may suggest parenting strategies, and when it would help, therapy for other family members.
What ages do you see?
Children, teens, and young adults. Our psychologists can do developmental testing for children as young as 24 months.
Do you test for ADHD, autism, or learning differences?
Yes. Our psychologists offer psychological, psychoeducational, and developmental testing, with a written report and a feedback meeting.
Can my teen meet online?
Yes. Secure online sessions are available for children, teens, and adults, as well as in-person sessions in McLean.
Do you take insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice, so we don't bill insurance companies directly. Our services are almost always reimbursable through out-of-network benefits, and we help you submit your claims. We don't participate in Medicare or Medicaid.
